The short version
Unfold doesn't collect, store or share any personal data. It has no account, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. Everything it does happens on your device.
Unfold is made by 3x2 Studio (Sebastian Dietrich). This policy covers Unfold for Mac, iPhone and iPad, including its Finder extension, Quick Action and Shortcuts action.
What Unfold works with, and where it stays
- Archives and folders you open. Unfold reads the archives you open, drop or select, and writes the extracted files next to them or to a folder you choose. To find all parts of a multipart archive and save next to it, it asks once for access to a folder (for example your home folder). It remembers which folders you allowed, on your device, so it doesn't ask again. You can remove them in Settings › General › Folder Access.
- Saved passwords. If you save passwords to Unfold's list, they are stored in your Keychain on your device. If iCloud Keychain is turned on, Apple syncs them between your devices, end-to-end encrypted; 3x2 Studio can't see them. Unfold never writes passwords to logs, and they are only used to open the archives you ask it to open.
- Settings. Your preferences (for example where to extract) are stored on your device.
None of this is ever sent to 3x2 Studio or anyone else.
Tips
Unfold is free and has no in-app purchases. This website and the download from it have a “Buy Me a Coffee” link that opens Ko-fi; Ko-fi's privacy policy applies there. Unfold itself doesn't track whether you used it.
Updates of the download from this website
The Mac version downloaded from this website (not the App Store version) checks for updates each time it starts (and once a day while it stays open) by loading a small file from this website, hosted by GitHub, and downloads new versions from GitHub. Like any web request, this shows GitHub your IP address; Unfold sends nothing else (no system profile). You can turn the automatic check off in Settings › About › Updates.
Crash reports
If you agreed to share analytics with app developers in your device's settings, Apple may pass anonymous crash reports to 3x2 Studio. They contain technical information about the crash and no personal data. You can change this under Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements.
Children
Unfold doesn't collect data from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published here with a new date.
